challenge

In what ways does your media production challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

One way in which we challenged the forms and conventions of real media products is that we challenged the hegemony that the protagonist of the film is always a 'good guy', we did this because we made it so our protagonist begins by being handcuffed and sent to prison, this gives the audience a negative opinion on the protagonist from the very beginning. We also challenged the hegemony that prisoners in society are all delinquents that have no good traits to them, we illustrated this by showing that J is just a normal person with both good and bad traits to himself. There are various techniques we used to show is weakness and vulnerability such as using a high angle long shot of him as he runs into the tunnel portraying him as small and at risk.

Another way in which we challenged typical conventions is that we subverted the male gaze that is often subconsciously shown in various media products. We did this by making sure that when planned the shots for our film we made sure that each camera angle and position for the women was equal the angle and position was for the men,.

We have challenged forms and conventions in terms of mise en scene because of the fact that we used high key lighting throughout in scenes such as the tunnel scene. High key lighting is usually warm, cheerful and energetic however in the tunnel scene J is feeling cold, vulnerable and disoriented. The high key lighting is also in the tunnel so that it can contrast with the outside of the  tunnel which is pitch black, this was done to                                represent how the tunnel was his last stretch of                freedom before he was going back to being                      trapped, not by the law but by the fact he is in                  a different reality.
